“Human-caused climate change is not a belief, a hoax, or a conspiracy. It is a physical reality.”
So begins an open letter published yesterday by 375 National Academy of Science members. It unequivocally states that burning fossil fuels have left human “fingerprints” all over the climate system, notably observed in sea level rise, declining Arctic sea ice, and ocean acidification. Moreover it challenges the climate denial rhetoric in the current US presidential election as “inconsistent with reality.” It compares the tipping points of global warming’s physical reality with those of politics, and concludes that Republican candidate Donald Trumps’ position to keep the US out of the Paris Agreement would have consequences that are “severe and long-lasting – for our planet’s climate and for the international credibility of the United States.” You may read a list of the letter’s signers here.
